Obituary

DARTMOUTH -- Julia C. Howland, 82, of South Dartmouth, died at home on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004. She was the wife of Stephen S. Howland.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Annie Davis (Smith) Cornell. She graduated from Dartmouth High School, class of 1940, and attended Kinyon-Campbell Business School.

For many years she was a bookkeeper and worked for Cornell Dubilier, Hemingway Inc. and Morse Twist Drill, and in later years was a home health aide with Coastline Elderly.

Mrs. Howland was a longtime member of the Smith Neck Friends Meeting. She served as clerk, secretary, Sunday school teacher and organist, sang in the chorus and worked on church suppers and at the annual clambake. She was an accomplished pianist and singer, she was very family oriented, and was a member of the Dartmouth High School Alumni Association.

Survivors include her widower; a son, Stephen W. Howland of Dartmouth; a daughter, Beth H. Gauvin of Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Stephen S. and Peter T. Howland and Ryan J. and Erica L. Gauvin. She was the sister of the late Morris, Leander and Philip Cornell, Edith Reid and Edna Cornell.

Her graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2004, in the South Dartmouth Cemetery, South Dartmouth, Ma. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Interior ramp available through the rear entrance.
