Obituary

Capt. Antonio V. Fonseca, 78, better known as "Captain Tony", of New Bedford died Monday September 13, 2004 from injuries sustained in a boating accident in Quick's Hole.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Victor A. and Ernestine (Oliveira) Fonseca, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Fonseca was formerly employed as a supply officer in the Merchant Marine for 42 years. He had served aboard the luxury liners, S.S. United States and S.S. America, and later on the container ship, American Lancer, until his retirement.

He was a member of the National Maritime Union. During the Korean War, he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. In his retirement he enjoyed spending his time as a recreational fisherman.

Survivors include two sisters, Ernestine O. "Tina" Fonseca of New Bedford and Stella O. Cruz of Dorchester; two brothers, Ernest O. Fonseca of Dorchester and Antonio "Nenezinho" Fonseca of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Dorothy "Notcha" Soares, Judith Fonseca, Hannibal O. Fonseca, and Joao Fonseca.

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday October 2, 2004 at 1 PM in the Seamen's Bethel, 15 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the New Bedford Port Society, 15 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford, MA 02740.
