Louis J. Cassano, age 90, of South Wellfleet, died unexpectedly on Wednesday October 16, 2013 at his home. He was the best friend of and loving husband to Margaret “Peggy” (Cull) Cassano. Born in the Bronx, New York on May 22, 1923, he was the eldest son of Louis and Irene (Rooney) Cassano. Mr. and Mrs. Cassano bought their home in Wellfleet in 1980 and spent their time living between Wellfleet and their home in Mt Kisco, NY. The couple moved to Wellfleet permanently in 1991. In 1985, Mr. Cassano retired after 43 years as an executive Personnel Director for the IBM Company.
During WWII he served with the US Army in the South Pacific, holding the rank of Sergeant. In 1954, he graduated from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
When Wellfleet became their full time home, Peg and Lou were so happy to be in such a beautiful place, surrounded by nature, which they enjoyed every day. They enjoyed many years as volunteers helping various organizations, including The Consumer Assistance Council in Hyannis and the Old Harbor Life Saving Station located in Provincetown within the National Seashore.
Lou was a devout Catholic and a man completely dedicated to his wife and family. He will be remembered as a kind, loving, incredibly capable and competent, yet unassuming man. His sparkling blue eyes, his humor, his love of life and his interest in others means he leaves behind many friends who loved him dearly. His cherished brother, Bobby, who predeceased him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his five children, Maggie Cassano and her husband Tom Way of Huntington, CT, Pat Cassano and her husband Ronald Booker of Ithaca, NY, Louis Cassano and his wife Sue of Southbury, CT, Ed Cassano of Carmel, CA, and Rob Cassano and his wife Lorraine of North Salem, NY. Lou was so proud of his 6 grandchildren Samantha, Kalila, Louis III, Robert, Tara Rose, and Andrew, and he loved to tease them, make them laugh and spend time with them here on the Cape.
