Richard "Dick" Spencer, 90, formerly of Cow Hill Road, Mystic, passed away on Oct. 14, 2013.He was born Dec. 11, 1922, in Groton, the son of the late Frederick and Grace (Twiss) Spencer.
He was born December 11, 1922 in Center Groton and attended local schools. He later joined the U.S. Army in World War II and was part of the medical corps and honorably discharged in 1946.
He then was employed by the State of Connecticut, retiring in 1976.
Richard and Jessie Spencer were members of the Old Mystic Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the Old Mystic Fire Department, the Pequot Fire Police Association, and also belonged to VFW Post 3263 of Mystic.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jessie (Crouch) Spencer in 2004. He leaves behind a son, Earle F. Spencer (Cindy) of Old Saybrook and a daughter, Joan (Spencer) Watkins (Jerry) of Ledyard, as well as five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He recently became a great great grandfather. Besides his wife, he is predeceased by grandson Jerry Watkins III.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Lambtown Cemetery in Ledyard. A memorial service will follow at 12 Noon in Old Mystic Baptist Church, 141 Shewville Road, Old Mystic.
