Attorney Paul Joseph McCawley passed away quietly on October 11, 2013 at the age of 86. He was born October 8, 1927 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of Michael McCawley and Ellen (McCarthy) McCawley. Attorney McCawley received his BA degree from Boston College and went to Boston College Law School, finishing in five years a double Eagle, in 1955. He met his wife, Jacqueline (Hopkins) in 1947 in high school after returning from World War II where he enrolled at age 17. He served in Guam as a radio operator for the Navy. He returned to New Bedford and was affiliated with Attorney John Nunes until he opened a law practice with Leonard Perry and Edward Hicks, Perry, Hicks and McCawley. He served on the New Bedford School Committee and was instrumental in getting New Bedford High School its swimming pool. He was also involved in the Jaycees, Junior Achievement, New Bedford Junior Chamber of Commerce as a young man. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of UMass Dartmouth and became chairman. He was an avid skier, sailor and golfer and enjoyed many happy days with his grandchildren in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He retired and moved to Florida with his wife and spent many years enjoying golf and many friends. He was generous to a fault and will be sorely missed. He was the youngest brother of Mary (McCawley) Walsh, James McCawley, Joe and John McCawley, Frank McCawley, Edward McCawley and Eileen (McCawley) Greenfield. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen (McCawley) Pallatroni and her husband Lawrence Pallatroni of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and son David McCawley and his wife Judy Pethick McCawley of Jeffersonville, Vermont. Grandchildren include Joseph, Paul and Keith Pallatroni and Matthew and Elizabeth McCawley.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in the future.
