Obituary

Alexander Carl Stohn, Jr. died peacefully on October 2, 2013, in his apartment at Allerton House, The Village at Duxbury.

Mr. Stohn was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Casey Stohn and his only son, Alexander C. Stohn III.

Born on July 19, 1917, in Jamaica Plain, MA, he was the son of Alexander C. Stohn and Sarah E. Stohn.

Mr. Stohn is survived by his four daughters: Joanna M. Stohn of Greenwich, CT; Mary W. Stohn of Rose Bay, Nova Scotia and Duxbury; Penelope S. Brouwer of Titusville, New Jersey; and Sara S. McCracken of Lighthouse Point, Florida; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Stohn graduated in 1937, from Roxbury Latin School and from Harvard University in 1941, where he achieved letter status in football and hockey. He married Mary Casey of Scituate, MA in July 1941 and was drafted into the army the same year. He served in Italy until 1946. After WWII, he and Mary moved to Framingham, MA, where Mr. Stohn was employed by Curtis Shoe in Marlborough. He enjoyed repairing electronic equipment for friends in his workshop. Word spread of his knowledge and this eventually led to employment at Fisher Pierce/Sigma Instruments in Braintree, MA. When Fisher Pierce designed the first Boston Whaler, Mr. Stohn volunteered to try it out at his summer home near Duxbury Bay. In 1962, his successful career in electronics and utilities resulted in his founding a manufacturer's representative company, A.C. Stohn Associates and later a second company, A.C. Supply. In addition to building his companies, Mr. Stohn was a dedicated father and grandfather, avid skier and sailor. He skied with family and friends well into his eighties and in 1997, was awarded a season pass at Loveland, Colorado, and was a frequent black-diamond skier at both Loon Mountain and Waterville in New Hampshire. In addition, Mr. Stohn and his wife were champion swimmers and divers, spirited competitors in tennis and golf, excellent dancers, dedicated music lovers, especially Jazz, and gracious hosts. In 1968, after many summers in Duxbury, Mr. Stohn moved his family to King Caesar Road in Duxbury, MA.

Mr. Stohn and his wife were devoted to the community and contributed countless hours to their Church and numerous cultural, medical, educational and athletic organizations. Mr. Stohn was one of the original participants in the ground-breaking Framingham Heart Study. He belonged to St Bridget's Parish, Framingham, MA and Holy Family Church, Duxbury. He was a member of the Millwood Hunt Club, Framingham; The Coral Beach Club, Bermuda; and the Duxbury Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore for many years. He also established the Stohn Lacrosse Prize in memory of his son at St Mark's School. He and his wife donated generously to many charitable organizations throughout their lives.

A Memorial Service will held at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont Street, Duxbury, on Monday, November 25 at 10:00 AM. No flowers please.

Burial services will be private.
