TAUNTON – Robert Mendes, husband of Lillian (Lopes) Mendes of Taunton, died at Taunton Nursing Home on Oct. 5, 2013.
He was 87.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Frank V. and Joaquina “Mary” (Santos) Mendes. Educated in Taunton schools, Mr. Mendes later served in the U.S. Army during WW II.
A retired supervisor, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, retiring many years ago.
He worked for General Electric many years ago.
A communicant of Annunciation of the Lord Church, he was a Eucharistic minister, sang in the choir, visited the sick, and helped with activities at Our Lady of Lourdes School.
Past president of the church’s Holy Name Society, Mr. Mendes was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 82 and the Holy Ghost Society.
A life member of the Portuguese American Civic Club, he loved duckpin bowling with his family, and later tenpin bowling with the seniors at Taunton Tenpin.
He also enjoyed playing cards and dancing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Mendes leaves two brothers, Charles Mendes and his wife Theresa, and Richard Mendes and his wife Noreen, all of Taunton; two sisters, Jacqueline Charlwood and Joanne Nolette, both of Taunton; an aunt, Helen Plante of Raynham; several nieces, nephews; and many cousins.
He was also the brother of the late Frank, William and Joseph Mendes.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Thursday, Oct. 10th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Annunciation of the Lord Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 9th, from 4 to 8 p.m.
