Estrella (Calle) Mendez, of Wakefield and former 19 year resident of Waltham and 17 year resident of Belmont, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Woodbriar Nursing Home in Wilmington following an extended illness. She is 100 years old.
Estrella was born in Abreus, Cuba on May 4, 1913, a daughter of the late Modesto Calle and Francisca (deLeon) Calle. She grew up in Havana, Cuba where she was educated and graduated from high school there. She immigrated to the United States of America on December 27, 1971 with her family and resided in Miami, Florida for a short time before moving to Massachusetts. Estrella was a homemaker and it was very important to her that her property was always well kept and she was able to spend quality time with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the opportunity twice a week to travel on public transportation to play bingo at several locations.
Estrella is the beloved wife of the late Jose M. Mendez. She is the devoted mother of Ninoska Rosado and her husband Tomas of Wakefield. She is the loving Mima to Maryorie Grande and her husband Jim of Wakefield, Nino Arsenault and her husband Paul of Melrose and her great-grandchildren; Louis Grande, Nicholas Grande, Robbie Arsenault and Eric Arsenault. She is the beloved sister of Acela Calle of Cuba. She is the loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Estrella's Funeral on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by her Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10 A.M. Interment at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 4 to 6 P.M. in the funeral home.
