GLOUCESTER: Richard J. Camille, Jr., 79, died peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Phyllis M. (Militello) Camille.
Born in Gloucester on December 2, 1933, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Marjorie S. (Hooper) Camille. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1951.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War era, he was honorably discharged in June of 1954 at the rank of Corporal.
Upon his discharge, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and Boston University. He retired from the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT and continued working as a consultant until recently.
Despite his many professional achievements, most important to Richard was his wife Phyllis and his family. Richard and Phyllis traveled the world visiting many interesting places making some lifelong friendships along the way. He enjoyed many years of boating and beautiful summers at Long Beach with his family. He was also a lifelong sport fan cheering on the Patriots and Red Sox. But most of all Richard was a supportive and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of fifty-nine years, he is survived by two daughters, Toni M. (Camille) Curcuru, partner of Edward Berkman and Cynthia Camille; three grandchildren, Adam J., husband of Janessa Curcuru, Andrew R. Curcuru and Ana M. Curcuru; two great-grandchildren, Kajsa M. and Kiara M. Curcuru; his sister, Beatrice, wife of Robb Schwartz; many cousins, including a special and devoted cousin, Maureen Dutra, and Donald and Pauline Camille, with whom he and Phyllis shared many good times. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Rosalie Moceri wife of the late Anthony Moceri; brother-in-law, Michael, husband of Susan Militello; and his godson, Michael, husband of Karla Militello, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Camille; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Antonio Militello.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday morning in the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Gloucester Office of Veteran Services, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. William Pultar, the VNA and Hospice of the North Shore for their care and compassion during this difficult time. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.
