Obituary

Roland G. Farland, 81, of New Bedford, died Tuesday September 14, 2004 at the Veterans Admnistration Medical Center in West Roxbury after a brief illness. He was the husband of Irene C. (Phaneuf) Farland.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Albert J. and Florida (Laporte) Farland, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life. He had lived in Brockton for 20 years before returning to live in New Bedford in 2001.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church in New Bedford.

Mr. Farland was formerly employed as a metallurgist for Industrial Heat Treating Company in Quincy until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Benson and USS Fall River.

Mr. Farland enjoyed sports, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife; eight sons, Roland Farland, Jr., of Acushnet, Gary Farland of Brockton, and Steven Farland, Kevin Farland, Peter Farland, Thomas Farland, Michael Farland and Patrick Farland, all of New Bedford; seven daughters, Joyce Silva of Wheelwright, Muriel Fenton and Catherine Ferrell, both of Glendale, Arizona, Jeanne Shepard and Roberta Bruce, both of New Bedford, Dianne Paradis of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Teresa Robinson of Attleboro; a sister, Thurley Lach of New Bedford; 45 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Brian A. Farland, grandfather of the late Kevin, Scott, and Sean Farland, and brother of the late Florence Chapman.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordFriday September 17, 2004 at 9:30 AM.Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church at 10:30 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Thursday September 16, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Shriners Burns Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
