Obituary

Mrs. Katherine Grace (Isaacs) Smith, a resident of Medford for more than 70 years and former wife of the late Edgar Smith, died at her home on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. She was 87 years old.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 2, 1926, she was the beloved daughter of the late Cecil T. and Katherine (Belden) Isaacs. Mrs. Smith worked as an Accountant for the Division of Employment Security for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for many years and retired. She was a former member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and more recently a member of the West Medford Baptist Church. She had served as Treasurer at both churches and was a board member for the Mystic Valley Elder Services. In addition, Katherine was a member of the Community Center in West Medford. In her spare time, Mrs. Smith enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking. Above all, she was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In 1947, Katherine married Edgar Smith and from this union they had four children; Mabel L. Jones of Nashua, New Hampshire, Marilyn A. Smith of Medford, Karen M. Gumbs and her husband Crispin of Anguilla, British West Indies and Jeffrey E. Smith of Medford. She will be sorely missed by her sister; Virginia Dean of California, grandchildren; Robert C. Jones of Springfield, Trinnice J. Jones of Dorchester, Joshua D. Smith of Medford, Melinda Smith of Medford, Jonathan Smith of Lowell, Joey Bunnell of Medford, Heather Gilliam of Atlanta, Samantha and her husband Daniel Fleming of Luton, England and Timothy Gumbs of Anguilla, great-grandchildren; Tristan, Maxwell, Timoth, Raquel and Malachi, brother-in-law; Edward Clayton, sister-in-law; Dorothy Isaacs, aunts; Marie Isaacs of Medford and Evelyn Isaacs of Washington, DC and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother-in-law of the late Van Jones.
The family would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Dr. Geoffrey Semaan of Peabody who was our mother’s Primary Care Physician for over 20 years. He started caring for her right out of Medical School. Thank You to Dr. Conway, her cardiologist and all the other caregivers at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford. They cared for our mother with love, patience and kindness.
Her funeral was celebrated in the West Medford Baptist Church, Boston Avenue, West Medford on Friday, September 13, 2013 at 11 AM. Many relatives and friends were in attendance. Visiting hours were held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Thursday, September 12, 2013, from 4 to 8 PM. Interment was privately held.
