Muriel Kathryn (McCarthy) Murphy, of Brockton, widow of the late Brockton pediatrician Thomas Murphy and mother of six, died September 9. She was 92.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Brockton, Mass. January 7, 1921 of Irish immigrants, who named her after the Irish nationalist heroine, Muriel McSweeney.
After graduating from Brockton High School in 1939, Mrs. Murphy attended Brockton Business School before joining the George E. Keith Company as a secretary.
She and Thomas J. Murphy married in 1945 and the couple made their first home in Mrs. Murphy’s childhood house on Blaine Street. They later moved to West Street, and then Prospect Street.
Mrs. Murphy was an active volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Charity Guild and the Brockton Cancer Society.
After Dr. Murphy’s semi-retirement, the couple moved to Easton. Dr. Murphy predeceased Mrs. Murphy in 1994 and in 1999, Mrs. Murphy moved to Willow Crossing Village in Mansfield.
The Murphys spent summers at their home at Wild Harbor in North Falmouth.
Mrs Murphy is survived by her six children, Caryle Murphy of Washington, Karen Burke of Yarmouthport, Colin Murphy of Falmouth, Kevin Murphy of Easton, Kenan Murphy of Natick and Colleen Kirchgessner of Arlington, Virgina. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her only sibling, Madeline (McCarthy) Davis, died in 2005.
Family will receive condolences at the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday 4-8pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home on Thursday at 9am for a funeral mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton at 10am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
