Mr. John R. Martino, age 81, a longtime resident of Tewksbury passed away on August 31st, following a lengthy illness. He was in his home surrounded by his loving family. John was the beloved husband of Christine E. (Fleming) and together they shared 42 years of marriage. Born in East Boston he was the son of the late Peter and Angelina (Agosto) Martino.
John was raised and educated in East Boston. Following high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and honorably served his country during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. John retired from Bank Boston in 1997 where he worked as a Supervisor of Transportation in the Operations Division for nearly thirty years. John enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Most recently he was able to travel to Italy with his family to visit with relatives and retrace his family roots. John was an avid sports fan keeping up on all the local teams, but he was passionate about Thoroughbred Horse Racing since he was a young boy in East Boston. He loved creating different systems to handicap the horses and traveling all over the country to different racing tracks with his friends and family.
Along with his beloved wife Christine, John is survived by his children, Stephanie Schwartz and her husband Brian of Mansfield, and Matthew Martino of Somerville. He was the loving grandfather of Aden and Trevor Schwartz. Cherished brother of RoseMarie Lishner of No. Reading, Elaine Lucci of Tewksbury, Lillian Slattery and her husband Terrance, Peter Martino and his wife Mary, all of Revere. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to gather with the family at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 374 Main St., WILMINGTON, Tuesday, September 3rd, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Dorothy Church, Main Street, Wilmington, at 11 a.m. Interment services will be private. John's daughter, Stephanie Schwartz and her husband Brian will also be receiving relatives and friends at their home on Sunday, September 8th, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in John's memory to the Lowell General Hospital TeamWalk for CancerCare, 295 Varnum Ave., Lowell, MA 01854.
