James H. "Jim" Crowley, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, August 30, 2013 at Bear Hill Nursing Home in Stoneham following an extended illness. He was 91 years old.
Jim was born in Boston on October 13, 1921, a son of the late James H. Crowley and Margaret (Bratton) Crowley. He grew up in Charlestown and attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Commerce High School in Boston. Jim enlisted into the United States Army on September 12, 1942 and served his country with honor and pride during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946 with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade. Jim furthered his education following his discharge from the Army and attended Boston University and graduated in 1951 with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration. He also attended Northeastern University later in his life and received his Masters in Public Administration. Jim worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for over 40 years as a Director and established the first child support program in the state of Massachusetts. He retired several years ago as the Director of the Food Stamp Program in Boston. Following his retirement Jim was very involved as a Ombudsman which is a liason between clients and their complaints with any agency. He considered himself a Anglophile, traveling to England many times with his wife during their lifetime together after serving his country there during World War II. He enjoyed playing hockey and played for the U.S. Army hockey team. He was a member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association and Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus.
Jim is the loving husband of 40 years to Denise Cronin. He is the devoted father of Meg Crowley of Charlestown and the late James H. Crowley Jr. He is the beloved brother of Margaret White of Wilmington and the late John Crowley, Rita Toomey and Catherine Mancini. He is the loving uncle to Edward White, Maureen Beraldi, Karen Breton, James White, Rita Cunningham and Edward Toomey.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's Funeral on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Interment at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
