Eleanor P. McGowan, 76, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, August 24, 2013, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Ed Reeves and the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. McGowan was born May 19, 1937, in Irwin County, Georgia to the late Elnor Joseph & Ruth Fowler Powell. A 1955 graduate of Fitzgerald High School, she worked as a hairdresser for many years. She lived throughout the United States, accompanying her husband during his Air Force career. They returned to the community in 1976. She was of the Baptist faith. She dearly loved to garden, paying particular attention to her yard and flowers. She also had a love for animals of all kinds and was a member of the ASPCA.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years: John P. McGowan, Sr. of Fitzgerald; her daughters: Pamela McGowan McNatt of Atlanta and Kim Prather and her husband: Bill of Ocilla; a son: John Perry “Jay” McGowan, Jr. and his wife: Jaki of Warner Robins; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one niece and several nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father: H.E. Sherret and a granddaughter: Christie Vickers Murphy.
