Fall River – George W. Sherman, 93, of Tickle Rd., Westport, formerly of Rehoboth and Holiday, Florida died Monday, September 6, 2004 at St. Anne’s Hospital. He was the husband of the late Gladys E. (Waterman) Sherman, to whom he was married for 68 years.
He was born in Taunton, son of the late Thomas W. and Lottie (Sherman) Sherman, and had resided in Rehoboth for 37 years and in Holiday, Florida for 25 years prior to moving to Westport 6 years ago. A 1930 graduate of the Merchant Marines Schooling Ship, he served his country as a Merchant Marine. Prior to his retirement he was a foreman for Revere Copper and Brass in New Bedford. He was a member of the Community Methodist Church in Holiday, Florida and was a former member of the Rehoboth Congregational Church.
Mr. Sherman was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rehoboth and New Port Richey, Florida and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rehoboth and New Port Richey, Florida. He was a descendent of George Soule from the Mayflower.
He is survived by a son: Alan R. Sherman and his wife Susan of Newport, NC; a daughter: Dianne P. Asher and her husband Albert R., Sr. of Westport; a sister: Jeanne Buker of West Bridgewater; 6 grandchildren: Richard Sherman, Joyce Clements, Brad Sherman, Lisa Foster Dabiri, Lori Scheffler and Randi Foster; 3 great grandchildren; several nieces; and 1 nephew.
He was the brother of the late J. Hilda Perry, Helen Linton, T. Otis Sherman, Harriet Sherman and Norma Sherman.
Funeral services to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at the Rehoboth Congregational Church, 139 Bay Street, Rehoboth.
Chapel service will follow at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.
Calling hours Wednesday 7 – 9 P.M. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport with a Masonic Service by the Noquochoke Lodge AF & AM, Westport at 7:30 P.M.
