Obituary

Arnold “Arnie” Goodman of Peabody and formerly of Chelsea passed away on July 27. Arnie was the beloved husband of Marlene (Rosoff) Goodman for 45 years.

Arnie was born in Chelsea and graduated Chelsea High School, Class of 1950. He continued his education and graduated from Boston University, Class of 1955. Arnie was a teacher and coach in the Chelsea Public Schools for 38 years as well as serving as a referee. He was an avid sports fan who played semi-professional basketball and was inducted into the Chelsea Sports Hall of Fame for his athletic accolades; one of which was holding the scoring record in Chelsea High School Basketball for over 10 years. Arnie was known as “the voice” of Chelsea Football and was the founder of the Chelsea Coaches Association. He also started the Chelsea Men’s Softball League and initiated intramural sports at the Shurtleff Street School. He was a columnist for the Chelsea Record and a member of the Peabody Rent Control Board for 23 years. Arnie was a member of the Walnut Street Shul and Temple Ner Tamid. Arnie received “Man of the Year” awards from numerous organizations.

Arnie was the devoted father of Kimberly Goodman Cooperstein and her husband Marc Cooperstein and Carrie Cohen and her husband Jeffrey Cohen. He was a loving son of the late Harry and Sarah (Selbovitz) Goodman. Arnie was the loving grandfather of Sarah, Sophie, David, Benjamin, and Ethan.
Funeral services at Temple Emmanuel of Chelsea, 60 Tudor Street, Chelsea, on Tuesday, July 30 at 11 AM. Interment in Everett. Memorial observance at his late residence on Tuesday following the burial until 8 PM, Wednesday 11-4 and 6-8 PM and Thursday 4-8 PM. Donations in Arnie’s memory may be made to the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Foundation, 17 Lafayette Ave, Chelsea, MA 02150; Walnut Street Shul, 145 Walnut St., Chelsea, MA 02150; Temple Ner Tamid, 368 Lowell St, Peabody, MA 01960 or to Temple Emmanuel, 60 Tudor St, Chelsea, MA 02150.
