Obituary

FAIRHAVEN -- The Rev. Horace Frederick Westwood, D.D., of Fairhaven died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, of complications from a hip injury. He was the widower of Virginia Wallis Boyd; they were married 66 years.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Rev. Horace Westwood and Florence Wright. He graduated from Tufts in 1938. Like his father and brother, he was called to ministry in the Unitarian Church.

He had been a minister in Nottingham, N.H., Somerville, and West Bridgewater, where he received his ordination. He was married in 1936 and graduated in 1938.He volunteered for the Navy Chaplaincy and held the rank of lieutenant commander. Most of his war service was with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific.

In 1945, the Rev. Woodward assumed the ministry in Fairhaven until called in 1950 to Houston. He was known as the father of Unitarianism in Houston, where he spent 22 years.

He marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

He published an article on Bishop James Pike; a wartime account, "Virgil in the Pacific"; a collection of sermons, "The Search for Understanding"; and a memoir, "Some of the Stories of My Life Told for My Grandchildren."

He was devoted to family and friends.

Survivors include a brother, the Rev. Arnold F. Westwood of Cummington; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Westwood-Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Christopher Andersen of Fairhaven, Mai-Linh Cummings of Framingham, Elizabeth Andersen-Gilreath of Mattapoisett, Noah Westwood of Atlanta and David Westwood of Guadalajara, Mexico; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Joan W. Andersen and Wallis F. Westwood.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 at the First Unitarian Church of New Bedford.
