WAYLAND: Mary M. (Hodgson) Curtin, 85, died peacefully surrounded by her family at her Wayland residence on Friday, July 12, 2013.
She was born in Lowell on May 16, 1927 the daughter of the late Thomas Barrett Hodgson and Madeline (Day) Hodgson.
Mary is survived by her husband of 60 years Harold F. Curtin, Jr. of Wayland. She was the mother of Dr. Harold F. Curtin, III and his wife Kathleen P. Curtin of Wayland and T. Barrett Curtin of Wayland and Grandmother of Patrick, Erin and Douglas Curtin all of Wayland. Sister-in-Law of Gerry Curtin of Seabrook, N.H. Also survived by 2 nieces and 4 nephews. She was the sister of the late Thomas B. Hodgson, Jr. and Francis W. Hodgson.
Mary has been a resident of Wayland for the last 48 years and spent her formative years in Lowell. She also resided in Newton and New York. She graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1944 and received her BA in English from Emerson College in 1948. She did graduate work at the University of Maine and Harvard University. She was a retired teacher and taught in Bangor, Maine as well as in Newton, Wayland, the Montrose Academy and the Academy Moderne. In her earlier years, Mary was an accomplished singer, dancer, public speaker and was a performer for the USO. She directed and performed in plays in community theatre in Maine and in Newton. Mary was a former volunteer at the Wayland Public Library and the Council on Aging in Wayland.
At the request of her family there will be no funeral home visitations.
On Friday. July 19, 2013 at 10:00 AM, family and friends are invited to go directly to the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Zepherin’s Church, 99 Main Street (Rte 27), Wayland for Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial.
Interment will follow in the Curtin family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests that memorial gifts in Mary’s memory may be sent to the Wayland Public Library, 5 Concord Road, Wayland, MA 01778 or to the Metrowest Hospice, 85 Lincoln Street, Framingham, MA 01702.
