Peter S. Carbone Jr., passed away on Wednesday, July 10th after a lengthy illness.
Born in Salem on Sept 10, 1925, he was the son of the late Peter S. and Margaret (Lettich) Carbone. Peter was raised and educated in Salem, and joined the US Navy in 1943 serving aboard the famed battleship U.S.S. South Dakota. During his navy service he earned a total of 12 battle stars. The Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal (10) stars, Phillipine Liberation Medal (2) stars, World War II Victory Medal, and American Theater Medal, participating in many of the naval battles of the Pacific, and was aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota, which was Admiral Nimitz flagship at anchor in Tokyo Harbor during the official Japanese surrender.
After his discharge from the navy, Peter began a 43-year career with the railroad. He began his career with the B&M railroad working in freight, and then moved over to the commuter rail service. He then transferred over to Amtrak when they took over the MBTA contract for the commuter rail in the mid 1980’s. Peter retired from Amtrak in 1989 completing over 43 years of service without utilizing a sick day.
He married his wife Patricia (Waldron) Carbone in 1953 and together they raised 6 children in Salem, and then Danvers after moving there in 1976. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1011 in Peabody for over 60 years. He lived his life for his family, and will be remembered for his smile, generosity, kindness, and caring nature.
Peter was pre-deceased by his first wife of 53 years Patricia in 2006. He is survived by his wife Louise (Connolly), 6 children, Patricia Sanderson & her husband Gary, Barbara Moroney & her husband Mark, both of Danvers; Donna Modugno & her husband Arthur of Beverly; Cindy Larrabee & her husband Alan of Windham, NH; Joseph Carbone & his wife Joanne of Peabody; Peter Carbone & his wife Tracy of Oakham, his step son Paul Pettinato and his wife Andrea of Weston; 15 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchild. He is also survived by 4 siblings John Carbone of Salem, Robert Carbone of Danvers, Louise Casey of Beverly, Marie O’Hara of Texas, and many nieces and nephews. His siblings Joseph and Mark Carbone, Lucille McInnis, and Marjorie Haefner predeceased him.
The family would like to thank the staff at North Shore & Greater Boston Hospice for the kind, compassionate care shown to Peter these last few months.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 9AM in Saint Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Hobart St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Monday from 5-8PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square.
