Cunningham, John F., of Palm Beach, Florida, Greenwich, CT, Osterville and Nantucket, MA, formerly of Weston, MA, died suddenly on July 2nd, 2013 at the age of 70. Beloved husband of Ellen M. Condon, loving father of Erin M. Cunningham and Trisha Cunningham Estill and the late Christopher J. Cunningham. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia Harrison, William J. Cunningham, Paul J. Cunningham and Rosemary Spurway as well as his cherished son in law, Scott Maguire Estill. He was a proud grandfather to Maguire Rose Estill, Christopher John Estill and Finnegan Sexton Estill.
John was born in Boston, MA to Rose and William Cunningham and attended the Boston College High School before graduating from Boston College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1964. He later became a member of the finance committee and a Trustee Associate of Boston College. In 1966, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College where he later served as an Overseer.
Mr. Cunningham had an outstanding career in technology, beginning with Oxford Paper in New York, NY. He then moved to Wang Laboratories where he started as a salesman in Chicago, IL. Eighteen years later, John retired as President and Chief Operating Officer at Wang. Mr. Cunningham then joined Computer Consoles, Inc., as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Most recently, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cunningham & Co. Inc., a strategic business-consulting firm.
Mr. Cunningham was currently an independent trustee director of Federated Funds in Pittsburgh, PA. He has previously served as the director of the First National Bank of Boston, Apollo Computer, Inc., Computervision Corp., EMC Corp., Honeywell Federal Systems Corp and Redgate Communications. In addition, he worked with Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Boston Archdiocese Finance Committee, the Boys and Girls Club of Boston and was involved in the development of The Performing Arts Center in Boston. He was currently on the finance committee of the Palm Beach Civic Association
John was an amazing man, a treasured friend to many, who loved to laugh, tell stories and who had a unique appreciation for the game of golf.
A mass will be held to celebrate John’s life at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA at 4:00pm on Wednesday, July 10th, 2013. Following the service, family and friends are kindly invited to a reception at Gasson Hall on the campus of Boston College. The burial will be private.
