CHICOPEE – Roland L. Bazinet, Jr., 85, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at his home after a valiant battle with cancer surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers from Baystate Visiting Nurse and Hospice. He was born in Holyoke on March 1, 1928, a beloved son of the late Roland L. Bazinet, Sr. and Rose (Sarrazin) Bazinet. He was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee High School and was nearly a lifelong resident of the city. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and served his country during World War II. He attained the rank of Quartermaster Seaman and served aboard the USS Collette, the USS Blue and the USS Mansfield and received the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged from the United States Navy in 1949 in San Diego, California, where he met and married his wife, Mary. Roland and Mary returned to Chicopee, purchased their home and began to raise their family. Roland became a member of the Chicopee Fire Department and served the city for several years at Station 5 in Willimansett. He later was employed for 23 years as a fireman at the Pratt & Whitney Company in East Hartford, Connecticut, before retiring in 1992. Active in his faith, Roland was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview where he served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister and an usher and greeter. Proud of his Catholic faith, Roland was a longtime member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus where he served the council in various capacities. He was the 18 year Treasurer of the council and recently retired due to his illness. He also was a former member of the Home Association Board of Directors of the council and a member of the Knights of Columbus Fairview Assembly 2670 Fourth Degree. He leaves the love of his life, his wife, Mary A. (Lucero) Bazinet. They were married on February 26, 1949 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Otay, California and were blessed with over 64 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three loving children, Mark S. Bazinet and his wife, Kimberly, of Richland, WA, Joanne M. Marshall and her husband, Van, of Chicopee and Michael N. Bazinet and his wife, Susan, of Whispering Pines, NC; and his four cherished grandchildren, Jordan Marshall and her fiancé, Andrew McConaha, Aaron Marshall, Grace Bazinet and Elizabeth Bazinet. Roland also leaves his loving extended family including his goddaughter, Claudia LaRocque and her family of Manchester, CT, Roxanne Daimler and her husband, Bill, of Colchester, CT; his many cherished cousins; and the extended members of the Lucero family. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, July 1, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, June 30, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
