Obituary

Isabelle (Gomes) Harrington, 86, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford died August 20, 2004 peacefully at the Heritage of Dartmouth. She was the wife of the late Edmund A. Harrington, who died on January 3, 2004. In May 2003, the couple celebrated 60 years of marriage at the Heritage of Dartmouth with family and friends.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Domingo and Gloria B. (DeJesus) Gomes, she lived in New Bedford most of her life before moving to Dartmouth six years ago.

She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mrs. Harrington was formerly employed as a switchboard operator at the New Bedford Hotel and as a bookkeeper for the Standard-Times and C.E. Beckman Company until her retirement.

She was a member of the Veridames of Providence College, from where her three sons were graduated. Her greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Harrington was the first student of Portuguese descent to win the Silver Cup while at New Bedford High School. Less than two decades after Women's Suffrage, she ran for city wide office for a seat on the New Bedford School Committee.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Edmund A. Harrington, Jr. of New Bedford and Rev. Kevin J. Harrington, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New Bedford; a daughter, Gloria E. Healey and her husband Walter of Lakeville; two daughters-in-law, Ronnie Glantz Harrington of Belmont and Patricia Harrington of Mattapoisett; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Harrington, Alison Harrington, Samantha Harrington, Patricia Harrington, Kelly Harrington, Ryan Healey, Tara Healey, and Meaghan Healey; 3 sisters, Sarah Grace of Fairhaven, Theresa Gracie of Somerset and Gloria Woolard of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Dr. Barry J. Harrington and sister of the late Alice LaCerdia, John Gomes, Lois Hayes, Lydia Santos, Noah "Gomez" Gomes, Dr. Samuel Gomez and Naomi "Norma" Paiva.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Tuesday, August 24th at 10 AM.

Visiting hours are omitted.

Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made the charity of one's choice.
