Thomas Brophy, age 89, of Brockton, died Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Signature Healthcare-Brockton Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Fitzpatrick) Brophy for 58 years. Born and raised in Galway, Ireland, he was the son of the late Patrick and Katherine (Lally) Brophy. Tom immigrated to the United States in 1950 and had been a resident of Brockton since 1955. He was employed for 23 years as a custodian at Cardinal Spellman High School and retired in 1989. Tom was known for his commitment to his family, church and community. He was a long-time communicant of Christ the King Parish and had been an active volunteer at both the church and Cardinal Spellman. He was one of 50 people recognized with a Sisters of St. Joseph Medallion for his contributions to Cardinal Spellman on the occasion of the school’s 50th anniversary. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cards and cribbage and listening to Irish music. Tom enjoyed playing the sport of hurling in Ireland in his youth and coached his sons in the Downey Memorial Little League.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children: Patrick F. Brophy, MD, and his wife, Theresa, of Winchester, Mary T. “Maureen” Brophy, MD, of Brockton, City Councilor Thomas G. Brophy, Esq. and his wife, Kristine, of Brockton, Daniel Brophy and his wife, Cheryl, of Fort Myers, FL, Kevin Brophy of Brockton and Martin S. Brophy and his wife, Jennifer, of Brockton; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Pitt, Margaret Mannion, Patrick Brophy and Martin Brophy.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Tuesday 4-8p.m. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday at 9 a.m. for a Funeral Mass in Christ the King Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, the family wishes donations in his name be made to Cardinal Spellman High School, 738 Court Street, Brockton, MA 02302
