New Bedford – Maria L. (Baptista) Claudio, 82, of New Bedford died Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at home with her family by her side, after a long illness. She was the wife of Joao F. Claudio, Sr.
Mrs. Claudio was born in St. Michael, Azores, daughter of the late Francisco and Maria A. (Carreiro) Baptista, and had resided in New Bedford since moving to the United States in 1963. Prior to her retirement she was a stitcher for the former Shawmut Clothing. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, New Bedford.
She enjoyed camping, dancing, shopping, fishing and trips to Foxwoods. While traveling in the Azores she enjoyed watching bullfights. Her greatest enjoyment of all was spending time with her family.
Including her husband, she is survived by 2 sons: John F. Claudio of North Dartmouth and M. Brian Claudio of Fairhaven; 6 daughters: Adriana M. Carreiro of Bristol, RI, M. Luisa Furtado of Fairhaven, M. Fatima Pires of Azores, Rosa M. Diniz of Cumberland, RI, Maria C. Borges of New Bedford and Anna M. Dutra of New Bedford; a sister: Hortensia Pacheco of New Bedford; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
She was the sister of the late Marino Baptista.
