BEVERLY: Elsa Misins Pooler, 92, formerly of Cedar Street, died Monday, June 10, 2013 in the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Paul Pooler who died in 1982. Born in Riga, Latvia on September 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Gobzemis.
As a young widow and mother, Elsa was forced by the raging wars in Europe to flee her beloved Latvia seeking safety for her family. Eventually, she and her two children were able to emigrate to the United States in 1952 to their new home in Hamilton. After her marriage to Paul Pooler, the family relocated to Beverly.
Elsa worked for many years as a private housekeeper before beginning a long career with Beverly Hospital in Housekeeping and later as Transport Supervisor. During those years, her knowledge of several European languages, including Latvian, German, Russian and Polish, was often called upon to translate for patients and staff. While her career at Beverly Hospital was of immense pride to her, for many of her family and friends she will be lovingly remembered for her cooking, especially her sauerkraut and awesome bacon rolls.
Elsa is survived by her son and daughter-in-law George and Paulette Misins of Beverly; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David Webb of Nantucket; son William Pooler of Florida; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Robert Grzybinski of Gloucester; as well as 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her sons, John and Paul Pooler, daughter Velta Kariores, and grandson, Michael Grzybinski.
Her funeral service will be privately held in North Beverly Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.
