Obituary

MEDFORD: Dr. Peter L. Sapienza, age 94, died on Saturday, June 8, 2013, in the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Maria L. (Trunfio) Sapienza who died in 2005. He was born on June 10, 1918 on Prescott Street in Everett and was the son of the late Peter and Mariannina (Marano) Sapienza. Dr. Sapienza was a graduate of Harvard University class of 1939 and Boston University Medical School class of 1943, Cum Laude. He had his own private practice in Malden, specializing in Internal Medicine for over thirty-five years and was past Chief of Staff of Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, past president of Boston University Medical School Alumni Association and a Trustee for the Everett Council on Aging. Dr. Sapienza was a U.S. Army WW II veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He also was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Italian American Society. Dr. Sapienza was an avid photographer and was a member of the Lynn Camera Club for many years. His shared his love and knowledge of photography with his children and grandchildren over the years, by teaching them what he learned. He was a music lover and enjoyed playing the guitar, piano and accordion. Dr. Sapienza was also fluent speaking in Italian, German and French. He is survived by his four sons, Peter Sapienza and his wife Barbara of Sausalito, CA, Robert Sapienza and his wife, Roberta of Topsfield, Stephen Sapienza of Medford and Paul Sapienza of Boston; seven grandchildren, Peter, Elisa, Christopher, Deborah, Paul, Jr., Maria and Corey; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Marguerite Cleveland of Newton and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, Louis Sapienza and his sisters, Josephine Manzi and Lelia Sapienza. A funeral Mass for Dr. Sapienza was celebrated on Thursday, June 13, 2013 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 114 High St., Medford at 9:00 AM. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 in the Beals-Geake Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, from 4 – 8 PM. Many relatives and friends were in attendance. Interment with military honors was held in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the American Red Cross, Blood Program, 180 Rustcraft Rd., Dedham, MA 02026.
