…Veteran; retired Medford Fire Lt.; 90
ANDOVER - Alfred “Al” Marotto, age 90, a WWII Veteran, former Medford Police Officer and later Medford Firefighter, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Virginia R. (DeBenedetto) Marotto, with whom he had celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary on April 27th.
Mr. Marotto was born in East Boston, November 25, 1922, one of seven children of the late John and Mary (Grappi) Marotto. He was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy during WWII, and served in the invasions of New Guinea and the Philippines as a L.S.T. crewman, and was awarded several medals and ribbons for his actions.
Upon discharge, he worked as a Patrolman for the Medford Police Department, and later transferred to the Medford Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant until retirement.
He raised his daughters in Medford, and moved to Andover in 1975.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Beverly Marotto of Methuen and Brenda Marotto and her husband Marc Potvin of Brentwood, NH; two beloved grandchildren, Tatyanna “Tia” Marotto-Potvin and Shanice Marotto-Potvin of Brentwood; a sister, Rose Baro of Townsend; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Jean Green, Anna Maestri, Louise Soderlund, Marie Carpentiere, and Arthur Marotta.
At his request, funeral services are private. Memorials to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St, Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843, MA 01830 will be appreciated.
