Paul George Schmidt, age 66, of Iron Street, Ledyard, passed away Sunday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Buffalo, NY on July 10, 1946 the son of George and Rita (Meyer) Schmidt. He graduated from Amherst (NY) Central High School, SUNY-Buffalo, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY.
He began work at Electric Boat in 1969 and spent his career as an electrical engineer in the Ship Control Dept., retiring in 2002.
Paul loved model trains and his English Springer Spaniels. He spent many years working with the New England English Springer Spaniel Rescue Group. Over the years he fostered many dogs, transported them from place to place, screened potential adopters and placed innumerable dogs into their forever homes which included several over the years into his own home.
Paul leaves behind his wife, Denise (Brown) Schmidt; a brother, John of Ledyard, two beloved springer spaniels, Barkley and Molly, and two adopted cats, Louise and Mojo.
Visitation will be at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 5-7pm. Services and burial will be private.
