Robert A. “Bob” “Mac” McCarthy, 88, left this world in quiet dignity on Monday, June 3rd surrounded by his family at Notre Dame Long Term Care Facility where he resided for a brief period, having been cared for by his loving wife for several years prior. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Rita (Bousquet) McCarthy; two sons, Kevin Paul and his wife, Sherry of Maine and Robert James of New Hampshire; a daughter, Dr. Maureen O’Rourke and her husband, Dr. Kenneth O’Rourke of North Carolina; 9 grandchildren who brought him great joy, Daniel, Kelly, Sean and his wife, Allie, Katie, Brendan, Delaina, Seana, Kerry and Patrick and numerous nieces and nephews, most notably, Kathleen Wojnarowicz of Holden. He was predeceased by three brothers, Edward J., Thomas J. and Richard M. McCarthy and three sisters, Marion F. Mastronardi, Ruth A. Chanis and Margaret M. Xenos.
Bob was born in Worcester, the son of Michael and Mary Ellen (Morrissey) McCarthy and lived here all his life. He studied at the former St. Peter’s High School and honorably served in the United States Navy, during World War II stationed in the Pacific Theatre. He enjoyed all sports, excelled at handball and boxing, but most of all enjoyed golf outings with his brother, Ed and his sons, Kevin and Bob. He coached Ty Cobb Little League for many years, long after his own sons were grown.
He was an accomplished bricklayer, stonemason and cement finisher, receiving many accolades for his work. He was an avid member of the Bricklayers Union Local 6, concluding his long career as Business Agent and Vice President at the state level.
His pride and joy however was his family life, and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time relaxing at Cape Cod with the love of his life, Rita. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Angels Church. Bob will be greatly missed for his love, his keen sense of humor and sense of Irish mischief.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Notre Dame Long Term Care for their compassion and outstanding care during Bob’s illness, especially his “favorites” Kebbeh and Vida.
His funeral is Thursday, June 6th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, June 5th from 5:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
