Raoul P. "Yayou" Galvin, 85, of New Bedford died Saturday August 14, 2004 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary F. (Francis) Galvin.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonia (Soares) Duarte and stepson of the late Julio Duarte, he had lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Galvin was formerly employed as a construction worker for the Laborers Union Local 385. He later was employed as a custodian at Southeastern Massachusetts University and at the Hazelwood Park Council on Aging Building.
Mr. Galvin served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the battle of Northern France, and was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.
He was a life member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association and the United Social Club. He was a member of the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association.
Survivors include a son, Raoul P. Galvin, Jr. of Yarmouth; two daughters, Judith Ferry and her husband Dana, and Chic Rose, all of New Bedford; his companion, Caroline Miranda of New Bedford; a brother, Albert Monteiro of Newport, RI; a sister Mary Woodward of Newport; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Manuel "Boboy" Roderick, Samuel Galvin, Oscar Galvin, Emelia Andrade, Mary Pina, Candida Galvin, Julius Monteiro, John Monteiro, Manuel Monteiro, Joseph Monteiro, Maximo Monteiro, Anthony Monteiro, Georgina Andrews, and Rita Monteiro.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordFriday August 20, 2004 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday August 19, 2004 from 4-8 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. John's Cemetery.
