John J."Sonny" Costa, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2012 at home surrounded by loving family. John was the son of the late John and Mary Costa. He graduated from Woodbury High School where he was a star basketball player and was best known for his 1955 last minute shot that won the game against Methuen High School. He worked for more than 40 years at Western Electric/Lucent in North Andover, Massachusetts. After retiring, John enjoyed gardening, cooking and life at the lake. He was a true New England Sports fan, avid runner and food enthusiast. John had a strong faith in God was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Hampstead, NH and will be missed dearly by all who loved him. John had a great love for his two dachshunds who his called “his boys”.
He is survived by his wife, Martha (Conley) Costa of Hampstead, one son, Jon Costa and his wife Chris of Weare, NH, four daughters, Kimberly Costa of Livermore, ME, Janet Ligon and her husband Randy of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Massey and her husband James of Ashville, NC, Sara Fournier and her husband Joe of Manchester, NH, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his sister, Geraldine Wynne of Haverhill, MA. In addition, he leaves many nieces and nephews and one cousin, Ronald Penczak of Salem, NH. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Wynne.
Calling hours were held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 5 - 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry, NH. A Liturgy of the Word was held on Friday May 31st at 10:30 am at St. Ann's Parish, 26 Emerson Ave. Hampstead, NH followed by cremation.
