Douglas Guy Hudleston Channon, 85, of Garden City Drive, formerly of Newport, died Sunday, May 12, 2013 at RI Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Shirley E. ( Howard) Channon. They were married for 61 years.
Born in Providence, he was a son of Percy and Louise (Bull) Channon. He lived in Glocester for many years before moving to Newport and then to Cranston.
Douglas was educated at St. Dunstan’s Choir School, Hope High School and the RI School Design where he graduated with an Associate’s degree in Textile Chemistry. He worked in Carlsbad, New Mexico in the potash mines. He was also employed in New York City at General Dyestuff Corp. (IG Farben); the former Arnold Hoffman Co., Dighton, MA and Providence, RI; Cranston Print Works, Cranston, RI; Kenyon Piece Dye, Kenyon, RI; the former Worcester Textile Co., Greystone, RI and Florence Dye Works in Woonsocket, where he retired in 1991 as the Superintendent of Dyeing.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the Navy from 1945-46 with the SeaBee’s NCB25 and NCB133 in Guam. He re-enlisted in 1946 and served aboard the USS Chicago CA136 in the occupation of Japan 1946-48. He was a member of the Anglo Catholic Church of St. John’s the Evangelist in Newport. He served the Diocese of RI as a Lay Reader under Bishops Higgens and Hunt.
He belonged to the following Anglo Catholic Societies; The Guild of All Souls, The Society of King Chables Martyr, the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, the Confraternity of Our Lady of Walesingham and Forward on Faith.
An active Mason, he was a member and Past Master of Hamilton Lodge #15, North Scituate RI in 1967, 1991 and 2006; member and High Priest of Scituate Royal Arch Masons; member of the Providence Council of Royal and Select Master Masons, serving as Illustrious Master in 1986, Doric Council of Royal and Select Mater Masons serving as Illustrious Master 1996-1998; member and Past Commander of St. John’s Commandry Knight Templar, 1981. He served the Valley of Providence Ancient Accepted Scottish as Thrice Potent Master 1994-95 and was elected to be an Honorary Member of the Supreme Council 33° Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in 1995. He was a member and Prior of Roger Williams Priory Knights of the York Cross of Honor.
Douglas received the Cryptic Mason of the Year award in 1999. He was a member and past Sovereign of the Plantations Conclave Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine; was appointed Associate Grand Chaplin of the RI Grand Lodge from 1982 -2004 and retired and made an Emeritus Associate Grand Chaplin of the RI Grand Lodge. He was a member of the Order of Anointed High Priests, Order of the Silver Trowel and Swords of Bunker Hill.
Douglas is also survived by his daughters, Glennis G. Channon of Cranston and Pamela L. Brightman of North Scituate. He was the brother of the late Eric G. Channon and Rev. Ralph Hudleston Channon.
His funeral is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 61 Poplar Street Newport, RI 02840
