Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Madeleine T. (Gobeille) McKenna, 88, of the Atwater Park section of Springfield was called safely home on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at Loomis House in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on January 25, 1925, a beloved daughter of the late Pierre A. and Valinda M. (Bourcier) Gobeille. She spent her early years in West Springfield and later returned to Springfield where she lived for most of her life. She graduated from Cathedral High School and then furthered her education at the former Springfield Business School. She was employed in the Election Commission Office for the City of Springfield and later was a longtime sales associate at the former Steiger’s Department Store at the Holyoke Mall. Madeleine was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club, the Massachusetts Citizens for Life and a longtime member of the Atwater Park Civic Association. Active in her faith, she was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis M. “Frank” McKenna who was called home on December 12, 2011. They were married on October 12, 1957 at the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. She leaves her loving children, Mary Anne Fishman and her husband, Dr. Robert Fishman, of Northampton, Carol T. Garrity and her husband, Patrick Garrity, of Springfield and Attorney John P. McKenna and his wife, Mariann “Lisa” McKenna, of Longmeadow; her six cherished grandchildren, Adam and Ian Fishman, Sarah and Nora Garrity, and Michael and Nicholas McKenna; her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Gobeille; and her many nephews and nieces. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her four brothers, US Army Lt. Col. Gerard A. Gobeille, Lawrence Gobeille, Robert Gobeille and Dr. Paul Gobeille. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, May 17, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129.
