Augusta, GA---On May 8, 2013, one of Augusta’s most beloved Superhero’s, moved on to patrol the streets of Heaven.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Platt’s Belair Road, 337 North Belair Road, Evans, GA, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Please bring your stories to share.
Capt. Robert William “Bob” Durland was born February 26, 1933 in Augusta, Georgia. He joined the United States Navy, in 1950 at the age of 17. During this time, he met and married, the Love of his life, Barbara Simmons. They shared the most beautiful Love Story, for the next 60 years. Following five years service to his country, he joined the Augusta Police Department. His first job was walking the beat and from there he went to the motor patrol. He was then moved to the detective division, where he made detective Sergeant and then Lieutenant. In 1978, he was promoted to Captain and was assigned, Head of the Detective Department and retired as Captain after 29 years of service. He then joined the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department and retired as a Deputy, following another 21 years of service. He served his hometown of Augusta, for 50 years, law enforcement was his passion. But what he loved, the most, was his family. He taught us to love deeply and to love unconditionally. We all know that Superhero’s are real and he was one of them. He gave us the love of travel and the ability to appreciate the simple things in life. His legacy will go forward, through his kids, grandkids and all other men, women and children that he loved along the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Shearnell Bailey Durland, siblings, Louis Durland, Elizabeth Herron, Archie Durland, Raymond Durland and his beloved granddaughter, Andrea “Shug-Shug” Burgess.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Simmons Durland, children, Kathy Durland, Tammy and Ken Wilson, Toni and Dan Dunn, grandchildren, April and Jason Ward, Bobby and Holly Breeden, Ally and Ryan Martin, Brooke Roberts, Nicole and Tim Wetzler, Stephanie and Ken Ferguson, Candice and Jun Kim, Matthew Wilson and Hunter Burgess, Ian and Claire Dunn, great grandchildren, Kylin Breeden, Allie Owens and Soon Cruze Durland Breeden, Noah and Ryder
