Obituary

ATHOL – Hervey C. “Curly” Moise, 92, of Athol and a former resident of the Aldenville section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Saturday, May 4, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at the UMASS- Memorial Medical Center in Worcester surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on January 9, 1921, a beloved son of the late Clement and Antonia (Guilbault) Moise. In 1939, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1960 from the United States Air Force at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee with the rank of Master Sergeant. He served in the battles of the Central Pacific, the China Defensive, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, the Northern Solomons, and the Philippine Islands. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 during the attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy which President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared “A day which will live in infamy”. He received the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Defense Service Medal with a Foreign Service Clasp, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star and a Silver Service Star, the Honorable Service Lapel Button of World War II, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with Three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. Following his retirement from the military, he returned to Granby and was employed for 15 years as a police officer for the Town of Granby. He also worked as a supervisor at the former Scott Graphics in South Hadley. He retired while living in Granby before moving to Florida. Curly and his wife, Alice, summered in Athol for many years and, for over 25 years, were ‘snowbirds’ in Clearwater, Fort Pierce, and Elkton, Florida. In 2008, they returned to be residents of Athol. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion in Granby, the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol. He was a strong willed man who in his own way showered his family with love which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves the love of his life, his wife, Alice L. (Centerbar) Moise. They were married on September 6, 1947 in Elkton, Maryland and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, Gary H. Moise and his partner, Maryann Woodbury, of Orange and Debra K. Grenier and her husband, Paul, of Athol; his 13 cherished grandchildren, Jessica Moise and her spouse, Barbara Weber, Travis Moise and his wife, Esther Stokes, Mary Amero, David Moise and his partner, Taryn Valdez, Melissa Moise and her partner, Rob Woods, Blaine Moise, Eddie Chicoine, Christopher Chicoine, Eric Woodbury, Michael Woodbury, Tracy Farnsworth and her husband, Leroy, Philip Tougas and his wife, Rhona, and Samantha Sansoucy and her husband, Nicholas; his 13 cherished great-grandchildren; his dear sisters, Jeanne Belair and Theresa Belair, both of Holyoke; his dear brother, Daniel Moise of Holyoke; his dear sister-in-law of the Centerbar family, Helen Miller of Easthampton; and his many dear nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brothers and sister, Louis, Ernest and Gerald Moise and Margaret Hickson. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, May 11, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 7 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, May 10, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
