Obituary

Eleftheria (Diamantis) Mazanitis, 92, of Worcester, died Thursday, April 25th. Her husband of 56 years, Dr. Spyridon Mazanitis died in 2001. She leaves two sons, Dr. Nicholas Mazanitis and his wife Sandra of Worcester and Dr. William Mazanitis and his wife Christine of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Atty. Nicole Mazanitis-Gorski and her husband Alexander of New York City, Christina Drogkaris and her husband Vasili, Sophia Mazanitis, all of Boston, and Alexander Mazanitis of Worcester; and a brother, Manthos Diamantis of Greece.

She was born in Epirus, Greece, the daughter of Eleni and Christos Diamantis. At the age of sixteen, she moved with her family to Bucharest, Romania where her father was a merchant. She married in 1945. After the Red Army took over Eastern Europe and installed communist puppet governments, life became impossible. That is why the family was forced to move to Greece and then immigrate to the United States as political refugees in 1962.

Eleftheria’s funeral will be held Friday, April 26th with a service at 10:00 A.M. in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 34 Gold Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, April 25th from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 34 Gold Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
