Donald R. Mercier, age 66, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away in the presence of his loving family, on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
Born in Brockton, MA on June 2, 1946, he was a devoted son of the late Henry L., Sr. and Belmeda A. (Rego) Mercier.
Don grew up in Mansfield and was educated in Mansfield public schools. During the Vietnam Era he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged from active duty on January 18, 1966 with the rank of Airman Fist Class. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve till November 30, 1970.
Prior to retiring in 2009, Mr. Mercier had been employed as a custodian for 20 years at the Mansfield Public Library and at the Mansfield Council on Aging Center.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield, Don was also a member of the Mansfield American Legion Post 0198 and a longtime member of the National Rifle Association.
Don enjoyed times spent with family and gardening. He always had a special place in his heart for animals, of which he loved caring for at his home in Mansfield.
He is survived by his niece, Linda J. Mercier-Janssen and her husband Steve of Mansfield. His grand nieces Brooke Waugh and Kathryn Janssen both of Mansfield, and the love of his life, Barbara Sheffield of North Attleboro. He was the loving great uncle of the late Matt McCue and the dear brother of the late Henry L. Mercier, Jr.
His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 23rd at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow with military honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
Visitation will be held prior to the funeral mass on Tuesday morning beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Don’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 25, Mansfield, MA 02048.
