Gwendolyn M. (Hatch) Berdeen, age 73, of Ledyard, CT died unexpectedly at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital on Friday, April 12, 2013. Gwen was a woman of great faith. She spent much of her adult life volunteering in American Baptist Churches and served in various roles such as Church School Superintendent, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Choir Member. Gwen was a supporter of the American Baptist Churches of Connecticut. She was an active member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church where she volunteered leading the children's story and Women's Fellowship, volunteered her time working in the memorial garden and participated in the Wightman Fellowship. Gwen was employed as the office manager at the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut from 2000-2013. After her retirement from the Women's Center, Gwen devoted her time to the church and her grandchildren.
Gwen was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Waneta Hatch, and her brother Phillip Hatch. Gwen is survived by her children James Berdeen PhD of Bemidji MN; Jefferson and his wife Marnie Berdeen of Goffstown, NH; Julie and her husband Brian Martin of Bozrah, CT; Kenneth Berdeen of Ledyard, CT; and her four grandchildren Leah, Lindsey, Peter and Sarah. In addition to her children, she is survived by her siblings William & Carol Ford, Kenneth & Nancy Longfellow, and Richard & Lorna Hatch, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday, April 18, from 6 to 8pm. A funeral will be held at the Old Mystic Baptist Church on Friday, April 19, at 11am. Burial will be held at a later date in Gardiner ME.
