WESTON: Lucy Gallup Carter, 88, of Weston passed away peacefully on April 13. “Polly”, as she was known to most, was born November 27, 1924 in Zurich, Switzerland. She was the daughter of William Albert Gallup and Lucy Pollard Gallup. She was a graduate of Vassar College and a schoolteacher in her early career. She married Frank B. Carter, Jr. in 1955 and they made their home in Weston. Soon thereafter they developed Woodleigh Farms, a diversified livestock farm that remains in operation to this date.
Polly was very active with her beloved Morgan horses and was for many years a leader for the Weston 4-H Horse Club. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts 4-H Foundation and the Boston Poultry Exposition for many years. She and her late husband also raised Basset Hounds and competed with their prized dogs.
Polly was predeceased by her husband, Frank B. Carter, Jr., and a brother, William A. Gallup Jr. She is survived by four sons; Charles E. Gillespie Jr. of Weston, Douglas P. Gillespie and his wife Denise of Weston ; Frank B. Carter III and his wife Mary of Claremont, New Hampshire and Stephen G. Carter and his wife Donna of Weston. She leaves five grandchildren: Amanda Fedele and her husband Josh of Weston; Shauntee Corbett and her husband Sean of Marlborough; Shelby and Jamie Carter of Claremont, New Hampshire; and Seth Gillespie of Hamilton, Texas. She also leaves two great-grandchildren: Stephen Carter and Rebekah Fedele of Weston. She also leaves two sisters: Florence Atkins of Shrewsbury and Jane Canning of Canterbury, Kent, England, a sister-in-law Pamela Gallup of Lincoln and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 320 Boston Post Road, Weston.
Burial will be private at Linwood Cemetery in Weston.
