Obituary

WAYLAND: Philip John Matyi, 71, died peacefully in the care and comfort of his family on Thursday, April 11, 2013 following a courageous and dignified battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in New York City, New York on December 7, 1941 the son of the late Philip A. Matyi and Agnes M. Matyi.
Philip was the loving and devoted husband of Barbara (D’Ercole) Matyi of Wayland for 50 years. Beloved father of Lisa J. Whittaker and her husband Clive G. Whittaker of Wayland; Deborah M. Matyi of Framingham; Ethan C. Matyi and his wife Krista (Conroy) Matyi of Wayland and Christian T. Matyi of Boston. Cherished grandfather of Matthew P. Whittaker, Amanda M. Whittaker, and Owen P. Matyi of Wayland. Brother of Frank P. Matyi and his wife Helene Matyi of Franklin and brother-in-law of Jane A. Roman of Framingham. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Philip has been a resident of Wayland for 46 years and previously resided in New York City, N.Y. He is a graduate of Xavier High School, N.Y.C, N.Y. class of 1959. In 1963, he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA with a BS in Economics. He received an MBA at New York University in 1966, and became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the Association for Investment Management and Research, AMIR in 2000. Philip has continued in the Investment business after beginning a career at Chase Manhattan Bank, N.Y.C., N.Y. as a Commercial Loan Officer. In 1968 he became CEO of ABT Associates, Cambridge, MA and recently has served as Vice President of Investment Marketing, at Independence Investment, Civic Capital, Zachs Investment and Thunderstorm Capital, Boston, MA.
Philip was a longtime communicant of St. Ann’s Parish in Wayland and was actively involved in all aspects of the church especially as a member of the Parish Council and serving as a Lector. He with his wife Barbara worked extensively for Worldwide Marriage Encounter for over 38 years and devoted many countless hours to this endeavor. He will be fondly remembered as a teacher, mentor and friend to the many people he met throughout his life and for always lending his time, talent and humor to encouraging others to succeed in what their life choices may be.


He raised orchids, tropical fish and bred Australian Gouldian Finch. He counted stamp collecting, coin collecting, and reading among his many hobbies. Philip loved to travel with his wife Barbara especially to Italy and taking cruises. He devoted his life to his wife, children and grandchildren who were his greatest accomplishment.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland, MA.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 9:45 am followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Parish at St. Ann’s Church, 124 Cochituate Road (Rte 27), Wayland, MA.
Private family interment will take place in the Matyi family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations in Philip’s memory be sent to St. Ann’s Church at Good Shepherd Parish, 124 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.
