Obituary



DARTMOUTH — Alfred Marshall DeWolf, age 87, of South Dartmouth, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on March 29, 2013.

Loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen (Fitch) DeWolf; his daughters, Deborah Jean DeWolf and Beverly DeWolf Thorn and her husband William; his grandchildren, Patrick M. Thorn, Christopher M. Thorn, Carolyn E. Thorn; and his sister, Nancy A. DeWolf. Al was the son of the late Ward and Eliza (Marshall) DeWolf.

Al was a graduate of Northfield Mount Herman School, Class of 1944, and Brown University, Class of 1950. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a radio-man on a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic and Pacific.

He was the third generation owner of the old DeWolf and Vincent Hardware Store located in downtown New Bedford that opened in 1881, closing in 1980.

A past president of the Kiwanis Club, he was a member of the New England Hardware Dealers Association and the Cape and Islands Orchid Society. For several years he lead a monthly investment group at the Southworth Library.

Al was an avid gardener sharing his prize winning dahlias and other beautiful flowers with his family and many friends. He spent hours of quiet time enjoying both classical and semi-classical music.

At Al's request his services were private and under the direction of the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford.
