Obituary

Judith (Smith) Burgo, 57, of New Bedford died Friday July 30, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of John C. Burgo.

Born in Boston, daughter of the late Charles H. and Patricia M. (Behan) Smith, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Mrs. Burgo was a foster mother for over 300 foster children throughout the years and was honored as Foster Mother of the Year in 1988 and 1989.

Survivors include her husband; her five children, Christine Burgo of Brockton, Kelly Burgo, Jeremy Amaral, Jennifer Burgo, and David Araujo, all of New Bedford; her seven siblings, Charles P. Smith of Florida, Virginia Thornhill and Susan Souza, both of New Bedford, Edward F. Smith of Florida, Michael C. Smith of Tiverton, RI, Kevin D. Smith and Thomas F. Smith, both of New Bedford; many grandchildren including, J.C., Marquise, Ty-Ana, Ty-Asia, Janae, Angela, Erica, Kristina, Izzy and Jardie; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late John C. Burgo, II and sister of the late Nancy T. Montalvo.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday August 2, 2004 at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday August 1, 2004 from 6-9 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her family.
