Thomas R. "Benny" Sexton, a 40 year resident of Melrose and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at The Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea after an extended illness. He was 77 years old.
Tom was born in Charlestown on March 14, 1936, a son of the late John L. Sexton and Agnes (Cunha) Sexton. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1954. Tom was a true Townie and never forgot where he came from. He enjoyed attending the Charlestown Boys Club and playing softball down the oily. He enlisted into the United States Army on October 7, 1954 and served his country with dignity and pride during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on July 25, 1956 with the rank of Corporal. Tom worked as an electrician for many years before his illness and was a member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, I.B.E.W. Local # 103 for over 31 years. Tom was a member of the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Light The Oily Committee and Bellevue Golf Club of Melrose. He enjoyed playing golf and making and repairing golf clubs, bowling, playing horseshoes and attending Patriots games. He also enjoyed his summer vacations in Marshfield for over 40 years.
Tom is the loving husband of 45 years to Mary M. (Babcock) Sexton. He is the devoted father of Thomas R. Sexton Jr. and his girlfriend Jennifer Tozier of Ipswich and Kevin M. Sexton and his wife Erin of Reading. He is the loving Papa to Madison Sexton. He is the beloved brother of Eileen Murphy and her husband Paul of Cambridge, John Sexton and his wife Lorraine of Everett and William Sexton and his wife Carol of California. He is the beloved brother-in-law of Jean M. Babcock of Charlestown and Helen L. Babcock of Winchester. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Tom's Funeral on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 9:45 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 11 A.M. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Visiting hours will be on Monday, April 1, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
