DUDLEY – Francis X. “Franny” Cregg, 75, of Dudley, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, with his family at his side. His wife of 45 years, Lorraine E. (Gion) Cregg, died in 2007.
He leaves a daughter, Christine A. Cregg and her partner Mark Hattabaugh and his children, Kate and Stuart; a son, David W. Cregg and his wife Susan, all of Dudley; a granddaughter, Hanna Rose Hattabaugh; 2 brothers, Michael W. Cregg and his wife Joan of Dudley, and Dennis P. Cregg and his wife Kathy of Webster; a sister, Patricia E. Boutillette and her husband Andrew of Charlton; a close friend, Barbara A. Cichowski of Dudley; and many nephews and nieces.
He was born in Webster, a son of Francis A. and Bernice D. (Meagher) Cregg and was a lifelong resident of Dudley. He graduated from Saint Louis High School in Webster in 1955, where he played on the basketball and baseball varsity teams. During his lifetime, he completed many engineering courses at various schools.
He was a 5 year veteran in the United States Navy, serving as an aviation electronics technician 3rd class at Quonset Point, RI.
Mr. Cregg first worked at Raytheon. He then was a group supervisor at Pratt-Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT. He worked as a field engineer for General Electric in Waltham, Lynn and Westborough, retiring as an engineering manager in 2001.
He was a member of Saint Anthony of Padua Church. He was an active member of the Dudley Lions Club for 42 years and had perfect attendance; currently he was serving as the club’s treasurer. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award.
He enjoyed traveling and was an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 29, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St., Webster, with a Liturgy of the Word at 10:00 AM in Saint Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Webster. The Webster-Dudley Veterans Council will provide the military honors at the cemetery.
