Irene Smith Hughes, 96, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, left this earth on Thursday, July 22, 2004 to go home to heaven to be with her Lord.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 24, 2004 at the Fitzgerald Church of God. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00, Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hughes was born October 17, 1907 in Elbert County, Georgia, to the late John Singleton and Lula Gunter Smith. She lived in the community most of her life. Mrs. Hughes was a former employee of The Monarch Company, H.R. Kaminsky & Sons, Fitzgerald Underwear and Fitzgerald Mills. She was a member of the Fitzgerald Church of God and the Young At Heart.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by one daughter: Sallie Matthews, Savannah; eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; one brother and three sisters: J.B. Smith, Lois Parsons and Ruby Douglas, all of Fitzgerald and Lou Robinson, Jacksonville, FL; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Newton Hughes, one son, John N. Hughes, one grandson, John N. Hughes, Jr., six brothers and four sisters.
