Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Salvatore “Sam” Demetri, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Rose (Aiello) Demetri.
Born in Boston on September 11, 1922, he was the son of the late Constantino and Catherine (Sabella) Demetri. Sam was a hard working fisherman engineer aboard many vessels including “Grace & Salvatore”, “Hazel B” and “Lady in Blue.” After giving up his life on the water, Sam went to work at Gorton’s, Gloucester Engineering and Danversport Yacht Club and finally Rose said it’s time to sit back and enjoy retirement.
Sam’s greatest joy in life was his family. He loved having them all together at family events. He will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also had the good fortune of reconnecting with his cousins that he hadn’t seen for over fifty years and kept a close relationship and loving bond with each other. Sam was a life member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 and a former member of the St. Peter’s Club.
In addition to his wife of sixty-six years, he is survived by two daughters, Katherine Dias and her husband, Anthony and Maria Gay; his son, Vito Demetri and his wife, Sandra; six beloved grandchildren, Rosemarie Randazzo and her husband, Joe, Justin Demetri and his wife, Danielle, Vanessa Gigliotti and her husband, Josh, Olivia Houde and her husband, Nathan, Stephen Demetri and Nicole Johnson and her husband, Len; eight great-grandchildren, Peter and Renee Randazzo, Marcus Demetri, Ava and Michael Gigliotti, Neil Houde and Tyler Johnson; five sisters, Jenny Palazola, Lucy Bertolino, Virginia Parisi, Lillian “Babe” Caciagli and her husband Tony and Kay Aiello and her husband, Joseph; four sisters-in-law, Pauline Piscitello, Jenny Curcuru, Diana Aiello and Grace Pallazola and her husband, Tom; brother-in-law, Sam Aiello and his wife, Rose; former daughter-in-law, Deborah Demetri and many loving nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Stephen Demetri, son-in-law, John Gay; three brothers, Augustus Demetri, Gussie and his wife, Frances Demetri and Nofrie and his wife, Sadie Demetri, four sisters, Josie and her husband, Frank Santuccio, Vita and her husband, Dominic Santin, Frances and her husband, Ponci Sinagra and Fannie and her husband, James Panto, seven brothers-in-law, Frank Palazola, James Bertolino and Charles Parisi, Joseph Piscitello, James Curcuru, Tony Aiello and John Aiello and his wife, Lena and a sister-in-law, Anty Militello and her husband, Frank.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday in Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church, Pleasant St., Gloucester at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
