Emily S. Perkins, 92, of Mystic, passed away on February 23, 2013.
Emily was born on June 4, 1920, on Allyn Street in Mystic to the late Seymour A. Stoddard, Sr. and Artis Zoe Stoddard. She was a member of the Robert E. Fitch High School Class of 1938 and attended business school in New London after graduating from high school.
She married Richard A. Perkins, Sr. at her parents’ home on Allyn Street in Mystic on December 18, 1942. They were married for 55 years until Richard’s passing in 1997.
Emily was employed at the Joel Thread Manufacturing Company in Mystic as a secretary for a decade before working at Electric Boat. At Electric Boat, she worked as a secretary in the maintenance department, retiring after 25 years of dedicated service in 1983.
She was a member of several community and service organizations throughout her life, including the Mystic Hook and Ladder Auxiliary, the Mystic Rod and Gun Club, the Union Baptist Church of Mystic, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Eastern Star. In addition, she volunteered her time at the Mystic Historical Society where she served as a docent and helped to transcribe letters and documents.
Emily had many interests, including spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to travel, especially to Ohio, Vermont. Alaska, and South Carolina. She also loved to knit, crochet, sew, and do cross-stitch. It was not uncommon for family to get handmade sweaters at Christmas and homemade cross stitch cards for birthdays and anniversaries, as well as Christmas. In addition, she used her knitting talents to make hats and mittens for the Warm Hats for Cool Kids program in Groton.
She is survived by her son James T. Perkins and his wife Rose of Ohio, her daughter-in-law Sally Perkins of Mystic, 4 grandchildren – Paulette Reinke of Ohio, Maureen Perkins of Manchester, Christina Vance of Ohio, and Darlene Lemmon of Waterford, and 4 great grandchildren.
Emily was predeceased by her husband and her son, Richard A. Perkins, Jr., who passed in 2011.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Apple Rehab for the tremendous care they gave and love they showed Emily during the time she was there.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 28, from 4 to 7pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 1, at 11am at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
