Indulis A. “Andy” Smits, 74, of Franklin died suddenly February 15 in his home. He was the husband of the late Ann J. (Seale) Smits who died in 2011.
Born in Latvia, November 21, 1938, the son of the late Peter and Elsa Smits, Mr. Smits came to America at the age of 9 and had lived in Boston for several years prior to moving to Franklin over 50 years ago.
He was a graduate of Northeastern University.
Mr. Smits had been the service manager at the former Keigan Chevrolet dealership in Franklin for many years. He had previously worked in the service department of several local car dealerships.
He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Boston.
He enjoyed history, reading and writing.
Mr. Smits had been a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and held the rank of Sergeant at the time of his retirement.
He is survived by his children, Daniel and Peter Smits of Franklin and David Smits of Portland, Oregon. He was the father of the late Paul Smits.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew and Eric Smits of Memphis, Tennessee and Gunnar and Aria Smits of Franklin and his great-grandson Andrew Gage of Memphis, Tennessee.
His funeral service will be held on Friday, February 22 in the Franklin Federated Church at 11:00 a.m.
Following cremation burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Medway.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
