Obituary

Oscar Berlan, 84, of Allenstown, NH passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 5, 1928 in Malden, MA, a son of the late Oscar Berlan Sr. and Marie C. (Harris) Berlan Jacobs. Oscar served in the US Army during WWII as a medic in the Philippines and received the WWII Victory Medal. He operated his own Painting business for many years before working for the Malden Housing Authority for over 24 years. After his retirement Mr. Berlan began making dollhouses, which have become treasured keepsakes for his daughters, daughters in law, and granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce (Nealley) Berlan of Allenstown, seven children, Michael Berlan of Scituate, MA, Deborah Catalado of Stoneham, MA, Denise Bowen of Scituate, MA, Kim St. George of Allenstown, Jacquelyn Boal of Londonderry, Laurie Ballou of Wilmington, MA, and John C. Berlan of Haslet, TX, 14 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, four siblings, Richard Berlan of PA, Phyllis Bartlet of FL, Elizabeth Anderson of Haverhill, MA, and Mary Jane Focht of Malden, MA, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by three siblings, Henry Berlan formerly of TX, Dorothy Lauritzen formerly of Malden, and Donald Berlan formerly of Maine.
Calling hours will be held on Monday February 18, 2013 from 4 – 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday February 19th at 11:30am in the funeral home. Committal will follow in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, DW Highway, Boscawen at 1:30pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284, earmarked for Lung Cancer or to the Mystic Valley Elder Services, 300 Commercial Street, #19, Malden, MA 02148.
